FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do you have different prices for recording, mixing or mastering?
No, everything is based on our regular hourly or bulk rate, whether you are recording, mixing, making radio edits, or creating performance tracks. Keep in mind that only Studio A Room has dedicated mastering equipment.
Recording, Editing, Mixing and Mastering is included in our rates. While we have the latest digital Mastering equipment in Studio B, only Studio A features dedicated analog Mastering Equipment coupled with our legendary custom Carl Tatz Phantom Focus Speaker system.
What is the minimum session length?
Is an engineer provided and included in the rate?
Yes, a staff engineer will always be provided and included in the rate.
Can I bring my own engineer?
Feel free to bring your own engineer, but as we are not a freelance studio, our policy is that one of our engineers must be present. We do not have freelance rates.
Will you save all of my sessions?
We will save your sessions for 60 days. Upon receiving payment in full for your session, we are more than happy to back up all data to a personal hard drive and/or flash drive provided at the end of your session. We can also send you your files via SendSpace. Please remember to budget enough time to backup files during your session.
What if I need a few revisions and don't want to schedule a full session?
All revisions are done in 15 minute increments billed at $15. This is ideal for when you need a few sounds turned up/down or some changes to the FX.
What is your late/ cancellation/ rescheduling policy?
The session begins when scheduled whether or not you are present. As we are a very busy studio, we may not be able to make up time due to tardiness. You are financially responsible for your entire scheduled session. You must call to cancel/modify/reschedule at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled session start time or you will be charged 50% of your total session fee, up to $100 TOTAL. If you make a deposit/pay in full and no show or cancel within 48 hours of start time, you forfeit your deposit.
How do I get there and where do I park?
We are conveniently located in Chicago’s West Town / Ukrainian Village neighborhood on Chicago Ave. Unlike most city neighborhoods, we have FREE street parking. We also have a small lot in the rear of the building, available on a first come first serve basis. For exact directions, please go to our contact page.

I see there is a extra Charge for Vocal Production, what does that include?
Being a vocalist, Jabari always goes the extra mile to transform your vocals. The extra fee for this service will be an additional $30 per hour to have Jabari take the necessary steps (coaching while you are on the mic, arrange, produce, Melodyne, Auto Tune, Voc-Aling, etc.) to give you the best possible vocals.
What do I need to bring to my session?
Your music and lyrics, and instruments if applicable, in an acceptable format: USB flash drive, hard drive, C.D. We are a Macintosh studio, so make sure your hard drive is Mac compatible. It also makes sense to have your material downloaded prior to your session, as you don’t want to use your paid studio time to download files. If you plan to bring analog hardware please make sure you have all appropriate power cables, zip disks, the manuals, etc. and any proprietary accessories. We are very knowledgeable with analog hardware, but to make sure your session goes off with out a hitch, please contact your engineer prior to your session to let us know the particular equipment you are bringing so we can be prepared.
What if I’m a first time SoundScape client?
We love new clients and will require a 50% deposit at the time of booking. Deposits are non-transferable and non-refundable. Remember, if you “no show” or cancel within 48 hours of your session’s start time, the deposit is forfeited.
When do I need to pay a deposit?
All 10 hour sessions require a 50% deposit at least 7 days prior to your scheduled session. If you are booking a session with less than 48 hours notice, or are a first time client, a deposit will be required at the time of booking to reserve the time. All same day sessions require payment in full at the time of booking. All sessions with Jabari require a deposit at the time of booking.
If I do not use all of my booked time, can I apply it to a future session?
No, studio time is non transferable and can’t be rolled over.
I see Jeff does custom production for a extra fee, what does that include?
Jeff is a long time producer now bringing his production services to Soundscape. During your scheduled session, Jeff will work with you to create a custom beat that fits your unique sound from the ground up. You will be able to work together in the studio to create the sound you are looking for. Production services are at an additional $30 per hour spent on production, as well as a $100 flat fee per beat created. Working with Jeff from beginning to end will result in a cohesive, crisp sound as he brings the entire song to life.
We booked a recording session and would like to have someone film during our session, is that okay?
Soundscape Studios loves when people share that they have chosen to record here with their fans. We just ask that you credit Soundscape Studios in your video.
What are the pros and cons of multi-track/stems vs 2-track mixing?
A multi track or stem mix results in the best possible sounding mix allowing the engineer to manipulate all aspects of the song,(ie: beef up kick, brighten snare, spread out synths, etc.) however, it takes more time to mix a stem/multi-track session, thus requiring more studio time. It takes Michael Kolar 2-6 hours to mix and master a muti-track record to industry standard. (Most Top 40 records are mixed from multi-track.) A 2-track is more cost efficient and ideal for demoing a song or loosie, however, our engineers are not able to be manipulate all aspects of the song (eg: can’t remove vocals, turn up just the kick or snare, etc.) It takes our engineers more or less 1 hour to mix and master a 2-track session.
